Position Summary:
The Senior Wetland/Aquatic Scientist will lead wetland delineations and aquatic resource assessments in compliance with applicable regulations. This position requires expertise in wetland and stream ecology, permitting, and regulatory compliance. The selected candidate will manage projects, oversee junior staff, and support business development efforts. The role requires strong leadership and technical skills to ensure high-quality environmental consulting services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct wetland delineations following the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) methodology.
- Prepare and review wetland delineation reports, permit applications, and mitigation plans.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on wetland and aquatic resource regulations at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Manage and oversee field teams conducting wetland delineations, functional assessments, and habitat evaluations.
- Conduct jurisdictional determinations and coordinate with regulatory agencies as needed.
- Develop and implement restoration and mitigation strategies for wetlands and aquatic resources.
- Mentor and train junior staff in wetland delineation, permitting, and regulatory compliance.
- Work with clients and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with wetland and water resource regulations.
- Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and project scopes for new projects.
- Participate in public meetings, stakeholder engagements, and client presentations as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in wetland delineation, permitting, and ecological consulting.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local wetland and water resource regulations, including Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permitting.
- Experience with erosion and sediment control practices and stormwater management strategies.
- Proficiency with GIS mapping tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and data collection software.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Certifications Required:
- Wetland delineation training in accordance with USACE methodology.
- Certified Wetland Specialist in at least one collar county of Chicago or in Wisconsin.
- CESSWI certification or equivalent erosion control certification preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Provide back-up support for aquatic resource delineations and permitting efforts.
- Train staff on developing proposals and quotes for ecological projects.
- Ensure quality assurance and final review of deliverables before submission to clients.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Conduct fieldwork in various outdoor environments, including challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to travel to project sites as needed.
- Work both independently and collaboratively in an office and field setting.
