In 2012, what began as the site for a new Saint Anthony Hospital to replace its 121-year old facility and continue providing services and employment to the west and southwest sides of Chicago, evolved to a vision for greater access to the other areas of critical need for healthy communities, including education, safe housing and jobs.
Located at West 31st Street and South Kedzie Avenue, the 30-acre mixed-use campus will deliver a combination of health and wellness services, early childhood development and continuing education, affordable housing, recreation and retail.
Focal Point Community Campus will serve an area of over 440,000 people living in diverse and unique neighborhoods on Chicago’s west and southwest sides, including Little Village, North Lawndale, Austin, Brighton Park, New City, East and West Garfield Park, Archer Heights, Gage Park and McKinley Park.
Developed and managed by Chicago Southwest Development Corporation, the campus will be a first-of-its-kind, financially sustainable national model, with rental income generated from campus tenants ensuring a continuous flow of funds redistributed into campus and surrounding community non-profit programs and services.
Brownfield Grant Writing
In 2013, Dave McCoy worked with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to write a grant and secure funding for a Brownfield Grant for Chicago Southwest Development Corporation. The Brownfield ABCA grant was for a 3.5 acre parcel located on the southeastern most part of the overall project. The grant application was approved by the USEPA and a total of $300,000 was awarded. In addition, a second $300,000 grant was awarded inside the 30 acre site. The overall goal of the project is to convert a blighted former industrial area into a community campus which will include a hospital, commercial and outdoor spaces for the use of the surrounding community.
Brownfield Remediation
A3E is actively working on this project and is providing grant item support documentation to our client for each activity that takes place on the parcels that are under grant reimbursement supervision. Grant reimbursement forms and invoicing are provided to our client for each phase of the project. The project is currently in the IEPA review phase for a Comprehensive Site Investigation (CSI) / Remedial Objectives Report (ROR) / Remedial Action Plan (RAP) report completed by A3E.
Brownfield Community Involvement
During the course of the grant application process, Mr. McCoy worked with the Client and attended public relations meetings to address the community members and community interest groups concerns. Mr. McCoy addressed questions related to the environmental impact and benefits of the overall project for the community in these meetings.
