The Village of Schaumburg is located in Cook County Illinois, and is a suburb of Chicago. In 2018 Money Magazine ranked the Village of Schaumburg the best place to live in Illinois. In keeping with their image, this village of 79,000 people is looking to create a more walkable and bikeable streetscape. Late into the growing season in 2022 and in anticipation of getting an early start on construction season in 2023, the village contracted with A3 Environmental Consultant’s joint venture with Olson Ecological Solutions (A3E+OES) as wetland consultants for an approximately 77.5- acre parcel to create a bicycle and walking path along Martingale Road.
Field Investigators
The field investigation took place on September 27th, 2022. After confirming the project boundary, the site was examined and traversed for the presence of natural or human induced changes affecting vegetation, soils, and hydrology. Suspected wetland areas were explored with mapped hydric soils, saturation or inundation visible on aerial imagery, areas indicated as wetlands by the National Wetlands Inventory, floodplains, and areas appearing as wetlands on historic imagery. Areas of drainage patterns and depressions in the landscape were also explored. All suspected areas were marked as a data point with a pink “Wetland Delineation” flag and its location GPS recorded. In areas with mapped hydric soils, coinciding wetland vegetation and hydrology were also assessed. In areas indicated as wetland on the NWI map, if wetland vegetation was found, the area was further explored for hydrology indicators and then hydric soils. Several data points were also recorded in assumed upland areas to confirm wetlands were not present. When wetland conditions were identified, a data point was collected within the correlating upland and delineated the wetland boundary between the upland and wetland data points.
Wetland Consultants
Kristin Adams was the certified wetland delineator who performed the field work, prepared both preliminary review and post-delineation mapping, and assisted with the report review. Rebecca Olson, a principal of A3E+OES provided project management and field assessment. Alden O’Connor assisted in the field delineation and wrote the report.
Wetland consultants conducted the delineation in September 2022 using the technical guidelines as described in the Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (Environmental Laboratory – ACOE, 1987) and the Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Midwest Region (ACOE, 2010). This process included off-site procedures and a field investigation. The off-site review of the study area included an analysis of the following maps and aerial photography, determination of normal precipitation, and a review of wetness signatures on recent aerial photography.
